Stone-pelting was reportedly witnessed near the Press Trust of India (PTI) building in New Delhi amid protests linked to the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) on Saturday, October 10. Initial reports said around 50 protesters had gathered in the area and allegedly threw stones at police personnel, leaving two officers injured.
According to reports, police detained all 50 protesters following the incident. However, a detailed official statement confirming the circumstances of the incident had not been released at the time of reporting.
Security arrangements have been tightened across Delhi amid the demonstrations. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) had also announced the closure of entry and exit gates at 45 metro stations until 6 PM on October 10, while interchange facilities remained available at most affected stations.
Delhi Police Cites Protest Rules and Security Restrictions
The Delhi Police had earlier explained why permission for the CJP’s proposed demonstration was denied. According to the police, the organisation submitted its application on October 7 for a protest scheduled for October 10, which did not meet the required notice period.
Police also referred to alleged violations of rules during previous demonstrations while explaining the decision. Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) has been imposed in the New Delhi area. Authorities warned that violations of the restrictions could lead to legal action.
Meanwhile, members of the All India Students Association (AISA) and several Left-wing organisations were also holding a demonstration outside the BJP office in Delhi. The CJP had organised a gathering at Jantar Mantar on Saturday over issues involving Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Himanta Biswa Sarma Criticises Opposition Protests
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma criticised the demonstrations organised by the CJP and opposition groups in Delhi, describing them as political theatre. He claimed that the opposition was struggling after electoral defeats, had no clear alternative and was losing public confidence.
Sarma said the protests would not have a significant impact, asserting that people continued to support Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the BJP and development. He also argued that if voters had supported the Congress, the party would have won elections, and accused it of trying to put pressure on the government after losing.
The Assam Chief Minister made these remarks while speaking to journalists in Haridwar, where he had visited Shri Narayan Shila Temple to offer prayers during Pitru Visarjan or Amavasya.
