Livestock farmers in Uttar Pradesh can now purchase indigenous dairy cows within the state under the Mini Nandini Krishak Samriddhi Yojana. The scheme, introduced under the Yogi government’s Nand Baba Dugdh Mission, aims to support dairy farming and reduce the difficulties farmers face when sourcing cattle from other states.
Previously, farmers often travelled to states such as Gujarat and Rajasthan to purchase indigenous breeds, including Sahiwal, Tharparkar and Gir. This involved additional expenses for travel, negotiations and transportation. Under the revised arrangement, traders from other states can participate in cattle fairs organised across Uttar Pradesh, allowing farmers to contact them and purchase cattle closer to home.
What Has Changed Under the Mini Nandini Yojana?
The Animal Husbandry Department has introduced changes to make the cattle purchasing process more convenient. According to the announcement by the department’s Additional Chief Secretary, large traders from outside Uttar Pradesh can participate in district-level cattle fairs.
This arrangement allows farmers to explore available cattle and communicate directly with traders without necessarily travelling to distant states. Purchase details can also be submitted directly to the Animal Husbandry Department for processing through the Nand Baba Milk Mission portal.
How Much Subsidy Is Available?
Under the Mini Nandini Krishak Samriddhi Yojana, eligible farmers are required to establish a dairy unit consisting of 10 indigenous cows.
The key financial details of the scheme are as follows:
- Total project cost: ₹23.60 lakh
- Government subsidy: 50% of the project cost
- Maximum subsidy amount: ₹11.80 lakh
- Subsidy payment: Two instalments transferred directly to the beneficiary’s bank account
The financial assistance is intended to help eligible livestock farmers establish dairy units and invest in indigenous cattle.
Land Requirements for the Dairy Unit
Farmers need approximately 0.20 acres of land for the dairy shed and green fodder management. Those who do not own suitable land may also be able to use leased land, provided the lease period is five years.
Meeting the applicable land and other scheme requirements is important for setting up the proposed dairy unit.
Benefits for Livestock Farmers
The revised cattle purchasing arrangement can reduce travel expenses and make it easier for farmers to connect with traders offering indigenous breeds. Buying through the available authorised channels may also help improve transaction transparency.
The subsidy provides additional financial support for eligible farmers planning to establish a 10-cow dairy unit. Interested applicants should check the latest eligibility requirements, application procedure and documentation rules with the Uttar Pradesh Animal Husbandry Department before proceeding.
