India’s mutual fund industry recorded a significant decline in total assets under management even as equity-oriented schemes continued to attract fresh investments.
The industry’s closing assets under management (AUM) fell by ₹4.44 lakh crore, or 5.1%, month-on-month, to ₹82.64 lakh crorefrom ₹87.09 lakh crore .
Debt Fund Outflows Weigh on Total Assets
The decline reflected net outflows of approximately ₹1.33 lakh crore across the industry, driven largely by short-duration debt categories. Changes in market valuations and other adjustments also contributed substantially to the fall.
The figures show that total industry assets can decline even when investors continue adding money to selected mutual fund categories.
Equity Mutual Funds Continue to Attract Investments
Equity schemes received net inflows of approximately ₹38,294 crore up around 30.6% from ₹29,314 crore . Equity mutual fund folios also increased by 17.69 lakh during the month.
Despite these inflows, equity AUM fell by approximately ₹1.67 lakh crore, indicating that weaker valuations offset the fresh money entering these schemes.
What SIP Investors Should Understand
A decline in total mutual fund assets does not automatically mean that investors are withdrawing money from every fund. Industry-wide AUM is affected by new investments, redemptions and changes in the market value of existing holdings.
SIP investors should focus on their financial goals, investment time horizon and the risks of their chosen schemes. Equity mutual funds can experience losses during market downturns, and neither regular investing nor past inflows guarantees returns.
