Actor Freida Pinto has praised the changing representation of women in Indian cinema and television, saying she is pleased to see more characters portrayed with flaws, complicated emotions and individual identities rather than being restricted to traditional ideals of perfection.
The actor, who gained international recognition through Slumdog Millionaire in 2008, reflected on how Indian storytelling has evolved over the years. She welcomed the growing space for female characters who are not defined solely by duty or conventional expectations.
Freida Pinto Wants More Realistic Female Characters
Pinto said that women on screen are increasingly being presented with a wider range of personalities and experiences. She believes characters who make mistakes or face difficult choices can feel more relatable to audiences than those portrayed as consistently perfect.
Her comments highlight the importance of giving female characters greater depth and allowing them to be represented as individuals with conflicting emotions, personal ambitions and different perspectives.
Actor Calls for Greater Creative Freedom
Pinto also expressed hope that India would experience a significant expansion in creative work. She pointed to the enthusiasm of young people and their willingness to share new ideas as encouraging signs for the country’s creative industries.
She hopes this energy will continue to receive support, allowing filmmakers, writers and other artists to explore fresh perspectives without their ideas being restricted or suppressed.
