Madhya Pradesh is preparing an ambitious tourism development plan to give Khajuraho a bigger place on India’s domestic and international travel map. The state has proposed investment of around ₹500 crore to strengthen tourism infrastructure and connect the historic destination more closely with the established Delhi–Agra–Jaipur travel circuit.
The proposal aims to encourage travellers to extend their journeys beyond the traditional Golden Triangle and explore central India’s architectural heritage, cultural experiences and surrounding countryside.
New Tourism Zone and Adventure Experiences Planned
A key part of the proposal is a new tourism zone near Datla Pahar, where the state has more than 100 hectares of land. Plans being considered include hotels, visitor facilities and adventure activities such as hot-air ballooning and skydiving.
The proposed development is intended to offer more than a short visit to the temples. By adding new experiences and accommodation options, planners hope travellers will spend more time in the region and explore nearby destinations as well.
The project remains a proposal, so the final facilities, development schedule and implementation details will depend on subsequent decisions.
Improving Access From Delhi, Agra and Jaipur
Better connectivity is central to the plan. Tourism officials are looking at ways to link Khajuraho more effectively with Delhi, Agra and Jaipur through air services and road networks.
The idea is to make it easier for visitors already exploring northern India to add Khajuraho to their itineraries. Improved transport links could also help tour operators develop longer cultural journeys that include several destinations rather than focusing on one city.
Why Khajuraho Is Important for Heritage Tourism
Khajuraho is a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its Hindu and Jain temples, built largely between the 9th and 11th centuries under the Chandela dynasty. The surviving monuments are celebrated for their detailed stone carvings, distinctive architecture and historical significance.
Beyond the temple complex, the wider region offers opportunities to explore rural tourism, local culture and the landscapes of Madhya Pradesh. The state is also looking to strengthen homestays and other visitor experiences to support longer stays.
What This Could Mean for Future Travellers
If the proposal moves forward, Khajuraho could become a more prominent stop on multi-city itineraries that already include Delhi, Agra and Jaipur. New accommodation, improved access and additional activities could make the destination appealing to a wider range of travellers.
For now, the ₹500 crore plan should be treated as a proposed development rather than a completed project. Travellers planning a visit can already explore Khajuraho’s historic temples, while future attractions and infrastructure will depend on the progress of the tourism initiative.
