Katarniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary in Uttar Pradesh’s Bahraich district is preparing to reopen for the new tourism season on November 1, offering visitors a chance to explore its forests, river scenery and rich wildlife.
Jungle Safaris and Wildlife Encounters
The sanctuary is known for its natural landscapes and wildlife, including tigers, leopards, elephants, dolphins, gharials and crocodiles. Jungle safaris are among the main attractions for visitors hoping to experience the region’s biodiversity.
The Gerua River also adds to the sanctuary’s appeal, providing scenic views and opportunities to spot aquatic wildlife when conditions permit.
New Visitor Facilities Planned
Preparations are underway to improve the visitor experience. A new selfie point featuring a wooden sign bearing the sanctuary’s name is expected to offer tourists a dedicated photo spot. An interpretation centre being developed near the crocodile centre will explain crocodile behaviour, habitats and conservation.
Forest routes, Tharu huts, the canteen and rest houses are also undergoing cleaning, painting or renovation as part of the seasonal preparations.
Boating May Take Time to Resume
Visitors should be aware that boating may not be available immediately when the season opens. Lower water levels in the Gerua River, linked to the Ghaghara Barrage closure period, have created difficulties for boat operations.
The forest department is also considering additional safari routes, although no final decision has been announced. Travellers planning a visit should confirm safari bookings and the availability of boating before setting out.
