The Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) has postponed the implementation of revised Point of Presence (PoP) charges for subscribers of the National Pension System (NPS) and NPS Lite. The new implementation date is December 1, 2026, replacing the earlier deadline of October 1.
The regulator announced the extension in a circular dated October 26, giving the agencies responsible for maintaining NPS records additional time to implement the revised fee structure.
What Has Changed for NPS Subscribers?
The revised charges were originally announced in August 2026. Under the latest circular, PFRDA has changed the implementation date but kept the other provisions of the earlier framework unchanged.
The Point of Presence (PoP) is an authorised service provider that helps subscribers access pension-related services, including account opening and other transactions. The revised framework sets out the charges applicable to these services.
What Are the Revised NPS Charges?
Under the announced framework, the one-time onboarding charge is ₹200 per Permanent Retirement Account Number (PRAN) for applicable registrations. For eligible subscribers who complete the entire onboarding process digitally without face-to-face interaction, the one-time charge may be ₹100, subject to the prescribed conditions.
The framework also provides for an annual charge of 0.20% of assets under management for applicable accounts, with the amount adjusted through the net asset value (NAV) and paid to the PoP quarterly. Dormant accounts are excluded from this annual AUM-linked charge under the framework.
These provisions remain subject to the detailed rules and eligibility conditions in PFRDA’s circular.
When Will the New Charges Take Effect?
The revised framework is scheduled to take effect on December 1, 2026. Central Recordkeeping Agencies have been directed to implement the applicable deductions from that date.
NPS and NPS Lite subscribers should review the applicable charges and understand how the revised structure may affect their accounts. The latest extension provides additional time before the changes are implemented, but it does not cancel the revised framework.
Subscribers should refer to the official PFRDA circular for the full terms and conditions applicable to their accounts.
