International travel from India could become more convenient for eligible passengers as Digi Yatra prepares to test digital processing for international journeys at seven airports from November 1, 2026.
The trial will run through December and will allow eligible Indian travellers with e-passports to use a digital identity credential at participating airport touchpoints.
Seven Airports Included in the Trial
The programme will cover:
- Delhi
- Bengaluru
- Hyderabad
- Kochi
- Mumbai
- Chennai
- Amritsar
Eligible passengers travelling on selected international flights operated by Air India and IndiGo will be able to participate.
How the Digital Process Will Work
Travellers can create a digital credential through the Digi Yatra app by scanning their passport, reading its electronic chip using NFC and completing selfie verification.
Where the required airport infrastructure is available, the credential may be used at selected entry, security and boarding points.
Physical Documents Will Still Be Required
The digital facility will not replace passports, airline checks, immigration procedures or other mandatory travel documents. The trial will help authorities assess passenger experience and the possibility of expanding the system in the future.
