Indian equity markets remained under pressure as rising crude oil prices and geopolitical tensions weighed on investor sentiment. The Sensex and Nifty declined for a third consecutive trading session, while losses spread across several major sectors.
Sensex and Nifty Extend Their Decline
The BSE Sensex fell 0.49% to 73,343.98, while the Nifty 50 dropped 0.73% to 22,647.90. Mid-cap and small-cap indices also declined by around 1.2% each, reflecting weakness beyond the largest listed companies.
Selling pressure was widespread, with 15 of the 16 major sectoral indices ending lower. HDFC Bank and Reliance Industries were among the prominent stocks that declined during the session.
Rising Crude Oil Prices Increase Economic Concerns
Brent crude prices climbed above $110 per barrel, raising concerns about inflation and the cost of imported energy. Higher oil prices can increase expenses for fuel, transportation and businesses that depend on petroleum-based inputs.
The developments also added uncertainty to India’s economic outlook, as prolonged increases in energy costs can affect corporate margins and household spending.
What Mutual Fund and SIP Investors Should Know
Market declines can affect the short-term value of equity mutual fund portfolios, particularly those with significant exposure to stocks. However, one or several weak trading sessions do not determine the long-term outcome of an investment.
Investors should review their financial goals, time horizon and risk tolerance before making portfolio changes. SIPs do not guarantee returns, but regular investing can help investors avoid relying entirely on attempts to time the market.
