India’s mutual fund industry recorded a new milestone as monthly investments through Systematic Investment Plans (SIPs) climbed to an all-time high of ₹32,490 crore. The increase highlights continued participation by investors using regular contributions to build their mutual fund investments.
The latest industry figures also showed a significant rise in equity mutual fund inflows, although withdrawals from debt-oriented schemes weighed on the industry’s overall assets.
SIP Contributions Reach a New Record
Monthly SIP contributions increased from ₹32,297 crore in August to ₹32,490 crore in September, marking a fresh record. The monthly increase stood at ₹193 crore, while contributions were approximately 10.7% higher than the ₹29,361 crore recorded in September 2025.
Around 63.26 lakh new SIP registrations were recorded during September. The total number of outstanding SIP accounts rose to 10.89 crore, compared with 10.75 crore in August.
SIP-linked assets under management, however, declined to ₹17.86 lakh crore from ₹18.62 lakh crore in the previous month, reflecting the impact of changes in investment valuations and redemptions.
Equity Mutual Funds Attract Strong Inflows
Equity-oriented mutual fund schemes received net investments of approximately ₹38,307 crore in September, up nearly 31% from ₹29,329 crore in August.
Small-cap funds attracted the largest share among equity fund categories, receiving around ₹9,039 crore. Mid-cap funds followed with approximately ₹7,835 crore, while flexi-cap funds collected about ₹6,702 crore.
Large-cap funds also returned to positive territory, recording net inflows of around ₹859 crore after experiencing withdrawals in the previous two months.
These figures indicate that investors continued to allocate money to equity mutual funds despite market uncertainty.
Overall Mutual Fund Assets Decline
Despite the strong SIP and equity inflows, the mutual fund industry’s total assets under management fell to ₹82.64 lakh crore at the end of September, down from ₹87.08 lakh crore in August.
Debt-oriented mutual funds recorded net outflows of approximately ₹1.83 lakh crore during the month, contributing significantly to the overall decline. Hybrid schemes also experienced net withdrawals.
The contrasting trends show that record monthly SIP contributions do not necessarily mean the total value of mutual fund assets will increase every month. Market movements and withdrawals from other fund categories can affect the industry’s overall asset base.
What the Latest Figures Mean for Investors
The September data highlights the continued popularity of regular mutual fund investing in India. However, a record level of SIP contributions should not be interpreted as a guarantee of returns or protection against market losses.
Investors should consider their financial goals, investment horizon and ability to tolerate market fluctuations before choosing a mutual fund category. Equity funds, particularly small-cap funds, can experience substantial price movements, making it important to understand the risks involved.
The latest figures point to continued interest in systematic investing, even as different segments of the mutual fund industry experience contrasting trends.
