Passengers travelling abroad from Patna may soon find international connections easier as Jay Prakash Narayan International Airport prepares to introduce customs and immigration facilities. The proposed system is expected to reduce the inconvenience faced by travellers who currently connect through major airports to complete international travel formalities.
Customs and Immigration Counters Planned
Construction work has begun, with the main phase scheduled to start on November 1. The new counters are planned for Gates 12 and 12-A in the departure area.
Airport officials are targeting completion by December 2026 or January 2027, subject to the necessary approvals and operational readiness.
Easier Connections for International Passengers
At present, passengers departing from Patna generally connect through airports such as Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata or Chennai to complete customs and immigration procedures before boarding international flights.
The proposed arrangement is intended to allow eligible passengers to complete these formalities at Patna before continuing through a designated connecting airport. It is also expected to make baggage transfers easier under the applicable airline arrangements.
What Travellers Should Know
The facility is not yet operational. Passengers should continue following their airline’s existing check-in, baggage and immigration instructions until the airport confirms the new system is available.
Once introduced, the arrangement could make international journeys more convenient for passengers from Bihar and nearby regions by simplifying parts of the connecting process.
