The Indian stock market came under pressure on Thursday as the Sensex and Nifty extended their recent losses amid rising crude oil prices and concerns over geopolitical tensions. Higher oil prices raised fresh worries about inflation and their potential impact on India’s economy.
Sensex and Nifty Trade Lower
During early trading, the BSE Sensex fell nearly 600 points, declining 0.81% to 73,110.22. The Nifty 50 dropped 226.20 points, or 0.99%, to 22,585.15, moving below the 22,600 level.
The decline extended losses from the previous two trading sessions, reflecting cautious investor sentiment across the domestic equity market.
Rising Crude Oil Prices Weigh on Sentiment
One of the key concerns was the rise in international crude oil prices. Brent crude futures climbed to around $110.60 per barrel, adding pressure to the outlook for an economy that relies heavily on imported oil.
Expensive crude can increase fuel and transportation costs, potentially contributing to inflation and affecting corporate profitability. Geopolitical tensions in West Asia further added to market uncertainty.
Inflation Concerns Keep Investors Cautious
Investors were also assessing the latest minutes from the Reserve Bank of India’s Monetary Policy Committee meeting. The discussion indicated that further interest-rate increases could be considered to contain inflation, although policymakers remained mindful of risks to economic growth.
Meanwhile, India’s volatility index, India VIX, rose nearly 6% to 16.55, signalling increased market uncertainty.
What Investors Should Watch Next
Market participants will be monitoring crude oil prices, geopolitical developments, inflation signals and corporate earnings for further direction.
For mutual fund investors and people investing through SIPs, a single session of market decline does not determine long-term returns. Equity investments can fluctuate significantly, so investment decisions should be based on financial goals, risk tolerance and investment horizon rather than short-term market movements.
