Greenland has opened a new international airport in Ilulissat, creating a more direct travel connection between Denmark and one of the Arctic region’s best-known destinations. The airport began operations with an inaugural international flight from Copenhagen, marking an important development for the island’s transport and tourism infrastructure.
The new facility is expected to make journeys to Ilulissat simpler by reducing the need for travellers to connect through other Greenlandic cities before reaching the destination.
Direct Flights Connect Copenhagen With Ilulissat
The airport welcomed its first international service operated by Air Greenland using an Airbus A330-800neo aircraft named Tuukkaq. The new connection gives travellers a direct route from Copenhagen to Ilulissat.
Previously, many visitors had to travel through Nuuk or Kangerlussuaq to reach the region, adding another step to their journey.
Gateway to Greenland’s Arctic Landscapes
Ilulissat is located around 250 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle and is known for its icebergs, dramatic Arctic scenery and the UNESCO-listed Ilulissat Icefjord.
The improved air connection is expected to make the destination more accessible to international visitors interested in nature, wildlife and Arctic experiences.
Part of Greenland’s Wider Airport Expansion
The opening forms part of Greenland’s broader effort to improve its airport infrastructure and international connectivity. Better access to Ilulissat could support tourism and make travel to the Disko Bay region more convenient.
The new airport is therefore an important step in connecting Greenland’s remote destinations with international travellers.
