A new study involving Indian adults with poor sleep quality suggests that eating almonds daily may help improve how well people perceive their sleep. The findings add to research exploring the relationship between everyday food choices and healthy sleep habits.
What the Study Examined
The randomised controlled trial involved 175 Indian adults aged 21 to 55 who reported poor sleep quality. Participants were assigned to receive either 60 grams of almonds daily, equivalent to approximately 50 almonds, or a calorie-matched snack such as khakra, chivda or crackers.
The study continued for 20 weeks and examined participants’ sleep-related outcomes.
Improvements Reported by Participants
The researchers reported that participants who consumed almonds described improvements in perceived sleep quality, sleep efficiency and the time they needed to fall asleep.
These findings suggest that dietary choices may play a role in sleep-related wellbeing. However, reported improvements do not establish that almonds alone can treat insomnia or other sleep disorders.
A Balanced Approach to Better Sleep
Food is only one part of a healthy sleep routine. Consistent bedtimes, a suitable sleep environment, regular daytime activity and limiting late-night stimulants can also support good sleep habits.
Almonds can form part of a balanced diet, but the study’s findings should be interpreted in the context of the participants and the specific research conditions. People experiencing persistent sleep difficulties should seek appropriate medical advice rather than relying on a single food.
