A new study has raised concerns about undiagnosed high blood pressure in rural India. Research involving nearly 40,000 adults in Barshi, Maharashtra, has found that almost one in three participants had hypertension, while a large proportion were unaware of their condition.
The findings highlight the need for better blood pressure screening, early diagnosis and regular health monitoring.
Nearly 31% of Adults Had Hypertension
Researchers analysed health information from approximately 40,000 adults aged 30–69 years who participated in the Indian Study of Healthy Ageing between 2015 and 2020.
The study found that 31% of participants had hypertension. The prevalence increased with age, highlighting the importance of regular blood pressure checks among adults.
Most Affected People Were Unaware
One of the most concerning findings was the low level of awareness.
- 25% of participants had undiagnosed hypertension.
- Only 6% had previously received a diagnosis.
- Among people with hypertension, only 14% of men and 21% of women reported having been diagnosed earlier.
This suggests that many people may be living with high blood pressure without knowing it.
Medication Does Not Always Mean Blood Pressure Is Controlled
Among participants who already knew about their condition, 73% reported taking blood-pressure-lowering medication. However, only 39% of those receiving treatment had adequately controlled blood pressure.
This highlights why regular monitoring and medical follow-ups remain important even for people taking prescribed medicines.
Better Screening Needed in Rural Areas
Researchers have emphasised the importance of improving access to blood pressure testing and diagnosis in rural communities.
High blood pressure can increase the risk of heart disease, stroke and chronic kidney disease. Since it may not produce noticeable symptoms, regular health checks can help identify the condition earlier.
The findings underline the need to strengthen preventive healthcare services and make hypertension screening more accessible across India.
