Scientists have developed an innovative dental gel that could change how damaged teeth are treated. The new technology aims to rebuild lost tooth enamel by using minerals naturally present in saliva, offering a potential alternative to conventional treatments that mainly protect existing enamel.
How Does the New Dental Gel Work?
The gel contains specially designed proteins that imitate the natural process involved in enamel formation during early tooth development.
After application, it creates a thin coating over the tooth surface. This coating attracts calcium and phosphate ions from saliva and helps organise them into new mineral crystals.
The process is designed to rebuild the structure of weakened or damaged enamel.
Could It Help Reduce Tooth Sensitivity?
Researchers also found that the material could form an enamel-like protective layer over exposed dentin, the softer tissue beneath enamel.
This may eventually help reduce sensitivity caused by exposure to hot, cold, sweet or acidic foods and drinks.
What Makes This Discovery Important?
Unlike bones, tooth enamel cannot naturally regenerate once substantial amounts have been lost. Existing fluoride treatments can help protect teeth and repair early mineral loss, but they cannot fully reconstruct missing enamel.
Laboratory testing found that the regenerated material had mechanical properties comparable to healthy enamel, including under simulated brushing and chewing conditions.
When Could the Treatment Become Available?
The technology is still under development and requires further clinical validation before it can become an established dental treatment.
Researchers are working towards commercial development, with the first product targeted for 2027.
The discovery could eventually offer new possibilities for treating enamel erosion, tooth sensitivity and other dental problems.
