A proposed ropeway connecting Kamakhya Railway Station with the famous Maa Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati, Assam, has taken another step forward with a new tender issued for the project.
The planned 1.43-kilometre connection aims to make the temple more accessible to pilgrims and visitors while helping reduce road traffic around the important religious site. The project is being developed through a model that involves a private developer in its construction, financing and operation.
Easier Access for Pilgrims and Tourists
Maa Kamakhya Temple, located on Nilachal Hill, is one of the region’s major pilgrimage destinations. The proposed ropeway is intended to provide an alternative way to reach the temple area from the railway station.
By offering a direct connection, the project aims to improve visitor access and reduce pressure on roads near the temple, particularly during busy pilgrimage periods.
Project Timeline Still to Be Confirmed
The project’s estimated tender value is approximately ₹201.52 crore, including GST. Bids are scheduled to close on December 8, 2026, with opening planned for the following day.
However, a construction start date and the date when passengers could begin using the ropeway have not yet been announced. The project remains a planned transport improvement rather than an operating tourist service.
If completed, the connection could become an additional transport option for people visiting Guwahati and the Kamakhya Temple.
