The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are planning to expand adventure tourism by developing multi-day trekking trails. The initiative aims to give visitors more opportunities to explore the islands’ natural landscapes beyond their popular beaches and coastal attractions.
Two Trekking Trails in Development
A one-year agreement will support the identification, exploration and documentation of two potential trekking routes. The first six months will focus on surveying and recording the trails, followed by pilot trekking experiences and the preparation of a digital guidebook.
Nature, Camping and Local Experiences
The proposed routes could combine forest walks, coastal scenery, camping and opportunities to experience local culture. The project aims to introduce travellers to lesser-known areas of the islands through nature-based tourism.
Focus on Sustainable Tourism
The initiative also includes plans to develop local skills in guiding, trek management, safety and campsite preparation. Trail development will need to follow the relevant environmental, forest and wildlife regulations.
The trekking routes are still being developed and should not be considered open to the public yet. Further exploration and pilot experiences will help determine how the trails can be introduced responsibly.
