Sindhudurg Project Receives National Recognition
Maharashtra’s INS Guldar project in Sindhudurg district has received the Golden Banyan Award at the Heritage Awards 2026, bringing attention to the state’s plans to develop a distinctive underwater tourism attraction.
The project involves a decommissioned Indian Navy vessel that is being developed into an underwater museum and artificial reef near Nivati Rock off the Sindhudurg coast. The initiative aims to combine maritime heritage with marine exploration and environmental education.
Underwater Museum Could Offer New Visitor Experiences
The proposed attraction is expected to offer activities such as submarine tours, scuba diving, underwater photography and marine-learning experiences. These could allow visitors to discover the submerged vessel and observe marine life in its surrounding waters.
The project is being developed by the Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation in coordination with Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited. It is intended to give Sindhudurg a distinctive place in India’s growing marine-tourism sector.
Artificial Reef and Marine Conservation
Beyond tourism, the submerged vessel is expected to function as an artificial reef, potentially creating habitat for marine organisms over time. The project also aims to support awareness of marine ecosystems and encourage responsible underwater exploration.
The recognition highlights Maharashtra’s efforts to develop new tourism experiences that combine heritage, recreation and environmental interests. The availability of individual activities will depend on operational readiness and applicable safety arrangements.
