Public sector bank shares moved higher even as the broader Indian stock market came under pressure, with Punjab National Bank (PNB) and Union Bank of India attracting investor attention following their latest quarterly results.
PNB shares gained around 4.8%, while Union Bank of India rose approximately 5.3%. Improved profitability and better asset-quality trends supported investor interest in the two lenders, helping the public sector banking index outperform most other sectoral indices.
Better Results Support Banking Shares
Punjab National Bank reported an improvement in its net interest margin, a measure of the difference between interest earned on loans and interest paid on deposits. A stronger margin can help banks improve their core lending income.
Union Bank of India also reported higher profit, alongside a sequential improvement in asset quality. These developments helped the two lenders stand out during a session marked by widespread selling in the equity market.
What Investors Should Watch
Investors will be watching upcoming quarterly results, loan growth, net interest margins and changes in bad-loan levels to assess whether the improvement can continue. Although strong earnings can support banking shares, future performance will also depend on funding costs, credit demand and the broader economic environment.
