Ai Haibara from Detective Conan has taken first place in a Japanese reader poll asking which anime characters are good at English. The results were published with Haibara receiving approximately 29% of the votes.
The poll was conducted between October 5 and October 12, collecting 123 responses. It had previously been held two years ago, making the latest results a fresh look at which fictional characters viewers associate with strong English skills.
Dr. Stone Character Takes Second Place
Ukyo Saionji from Dr. Stone secured second place with around 6% of the votes. Readers highlighted his background as a former submarine sonar operator and pointed to moments in the anime where he speaks English.
Conan Edogawa, the central character of Detective Conan, finished third, giving the mystery franchise two characters near the top of the list.
More Popular Anime Characters Make the Top Five
Heiji Hattori from Detective Conan placed fourth. Ran Mori from the same series shared fifth place with Rin Itoshi from Blue Lock.
Other characters appearing among the top-ranked entries included Ryoma Echizen from The Prince of Tennis and Chisato Nishikigi from Lycoris Recoil.
Why Ai Haibara Won
Haibara’s scientific expertise and childhood experience studying in the United States were among the reasons readers gave for choosing her. Her background and family connections also helped make her a convincing pick for the poll.
The results reflect reader opinions rather than a formal assessment of each character’s language ability, but they show how fans connect characters’ fictional histories with their skills.
