The government has issued important clarifications regarding pension contributions under the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS), explaining how contributions should be handled during suspension periods and probation.
The clarification, issued by the Department of Financial Services, is relevant for central government employees covered under the scheme and aims to remove confusion about pension-related deductions in different service situations.
UPS Contributions During Suspension
The government has clarified that if an employee’s suspension period is subsequently treated as duty or eligible leave following the conclusion of an inquiry, pension contributions must be recalculated.
The revised contributions will be based on the salary and eligible emoluments that the employee becomes entitled to receive for that period.
Contributions During Probation
The clarification also addresses employees serving on probation. UPS contributions are not optional during probation, and eligible employees must follow the applicable contribution requirements.
What Does This Mean for Government Employees?
The clarification provides greater clarity on pension contributions and helps ensure that employees’ retirement benefits are calculated according to the applicable rules.
UPS continues to operate as a pension option under the National Pension System framework for eligible central government employees.
