India has permitted the import of approximately 6,500 metric tonnes of silver over the next six months to improve domestic supplies and support the precious metals market. The decision comes ahead of the festive and wedding seasons, when demand for silver jewellery, coins and investment products generally increases.
Government Eases Silver Import Availability
India depends heavily on overseas supplies to meet its silver requirements. More than 80% of the country’s silver demand is fulfilled through imports.
The latest import permissions are expected to improve availability in the domestic market and reduce the premium that Indian buyers have been paying because of limited supplies.
Silver Market Faces Weak Demand
Despite the upcoming festive season, domestic silver demand has remained relatively weak following a sharp correction in prices. Some investors have adopted a cautious approach after experiencing losses during the recent market decline.
The higher import allocation has therefore surprised market participants who were expecting demand to remain subdued.
What Could This Mean for Silver Prices?
The additional supply could help reduce domestic premiums and ease pressure in the Indian silver market. However, actual price movements will continue to depend on international silver rates, currency fluctuations and domestic buying activity.
The coming months will be important in determining whether festive and wedding-related demand can absorb the increased supply.
