Filmmaker Kiran Rao has expressed support for actor Imran Khan after he received a notice from the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) directing him to leave India by October 28. The development follows the actor’s participation in a protest in Mumbai against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The notice has sparked discussion about Imran’s participation in the demonstration and his status as an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cardholder. Imran reportedly holds a US passport and an OCI card.
Kiran Rao Reacts to Imran Khan’s Notice
After news of the notice emerged, Kiran Rao shared her reaction on Instagram. Expressing disbelief over the action, she wrote, “Wah, now it’s Mumbai police?”
She also reshared a post highlighting Imran Khan’s long association with India. The post noted that the actor is 43 years old and has spent 40 years in the country, where he studied, worked, experienced professional success and setbacks, and built his life.
Kiran Rao is the former wife of actor Aamir Khan, while Imran Khan is Aamir’s nephew. Her reaction has brought further attention to the controversy surrounding the notice.
Why Did Imran Khan Receive the Notice?
On October 15, the FRRO and Mumbai Police issued a notice directing Imran Khan to leave India by October 28. The notice reportedly cited alleged violations of the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025.
According to a Mumbai Police official, the action was taken by the FRRO, and the notice was served on the actor, who lives in Mumbai’s Khar area and stays in India on an OCI card.
The development followed a complaint by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Kirit Somaiya. He sought action against Imran over his alleged participation in a protest organised against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar by the CJP.
Somaiya argued that Imran, who reportedly holds a US passport and an OCI card, had participated in the demonstration despite not being an Indian citizen.
The actor was present at the protest held at August Kranti Maidan in Mumbai Central on October 10. He was subsequently detained by Mumbai Police.
Imran Khan Plans to Challenge the Notice
Imran Khan is reportedly preparing to challenge the FRRO notice in the Bombay High Court. His lawyer, Zulfikar Memon, confirmed that the actor intends to pursue legal action.
According to reports, the petition was expected to be filed on October 16 or October 19. The actor’s legal team has reportedly described the order as drastic and argued that the law does not prohibit OCI cardholders from participating in protests.
The legal challenge is expected to bring further scrutiny to the circumstances surrounding the notice and the provisions cited by the authorities.
For now, the matter remains a developing legal issue, with Imran Khan preparing to contest the order and Kiran Rao publicly expressing support for the actor.
