Actress Rakul Preet Singh has opened up about playing Surpanakha in director Nitesh Tiwari’s upcoming mythological epic Ramayana. The actress believes Surpanakha is one of the most misunderstood and complex characters in the ancient story, and says exploring her different sides made the role particularly interesting.
In a recent interaction, Rakul also spoke about the film’s wider significance, describing it as an opportunity to bring Indian history and storytelling to audiences around the world.
Why Rakul Preet Singh Chose the Role
Speaking about her decision to join the project, Rakul explained that two things attracted her to Ramayana. The first was the scale of the production and its ambition to present Indian storytelling internationally.
The second was Surpanakha herself. Rakul described her as a layered character whose actions play an important part in setting the central conflict of the epic in motion.
The actress believes there is much more to Surpanakha’s story than the episode for which she is traditionally remembered.
Rakul Wants Audiences to Understand Surpanakha’s Story
Rakul had previously responded to a fan’s letter about her casting as Surpanakha. She explained that the character’s complexity was the main reason she accepted the role.
She also expressed hope that audiences would approach the character with an open mind and discover the different dimensions of her personality.
For Rakul, portraying a character that challenges familiar perceptions is an exciting opportunity as an actor.
Ranbir Kapoor and Yash Lead the Film
Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, Ramayana features a prominent ensemble cast. Ranbir Kapoor plays Lord Rama, Sai Pallavi portrays Sita, while Yash takes on the role of Ravana.
The film also features Sunny Deol as Hanuman and Ravie Dubey as Lakshmana, alongside Rakul as Surpanakha.
The project is being produced by Namit Malhotra and Yash and is planned as a two-part cinematic adaptation of the epic.
‘Ramayana’ Release Date
The first instalment, titled Ramayana: Rise of a Legend, is scheduled to release in cinemas on November 5, 2026. The second part is expected to arrive around Diwali 2027.
With Rakul’s comments drawing attention to Surpanakha’s role, audiences are now curious to see how the film presents this important character and her place in the larger story.
