Krishna Mukerji, mother of Bollywood actress Rani Mukerji, passed away at the age of 75 on Tuesday afternoon. Yash Raj Films confirmed the news and said the family has requested privacy as they cope with the loss.
In a statement, YRF said the family was sharing the news “with heavy hearts” and expressed gratitude for the love, prayers and support received during this difficult time. The family also respectfully appealed for privacy.
Krishna Mukerji’s Close Bond With Rani
Krishna Mukerji remained a strong presence in Rani Mukerji’s life and was often seen accompanying her daughter at public events and other occasions. Rani had spoken publicly about their close mother-daughter relationship on several occasions.
Krishna was also associated with Bengali cinema and worked as a playback singer during her career. She was married to filmmaker Ram Mukherjee, who died in 2017. Ram Mukherjee was among the co-founders of Filmalaya Studios.
The couple had two children, actress Rani Mukerji and filmmaker-producer Raja Mukherjee.
Rani Mukerji’s Film Career and Recent Recognition
Rani Mukerji has established herself as one of the prominent actresses in Hindi cinema through films including Ghulam, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Saathiya, Hum Tum and Black. Her latest release was Mardaani 3, which hit theatres in 2026.
The actress was also recently honoured with the Raj Kapoor Special Contribution Award at the 62nd Maharashtra State Film Awards ceremony.
The award was presented to Rani by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis in the presence of Cultural Affairs Minister Adv. Ashish Shelar.
Rani Mukerji Speaks About Her Connection With Maharashtra
While accepting the honour, Rani spoke about her deep association with cinema and her connection with Maharashtra. She described the state as a place that holds a significant position in her personal and professional life.
Speaking in Marathi, she said, “Majhyasathi Maharashtra fakt ek rajya nahi. Maharashtra majhi janmabhoomi aahe. Majhi karmabhoomi aahe. Ani majhya ayushyacha ek avibhajya bhaag aahe.”
She explained that Maharashtra is not merely a state for her but her birthplace, the place where she built her career, and an inseparable part of her life.
