Mountain Destination Gains International Recognition
Vietnam’s Ta Xua commune, located in Son La province, has received the title of Asia’s Leading Emerging Tourist Destination at the World Travel Awards 2026. The recognition marks the destination’s first nomination and victory in this category.
Situated at an altitude of more than 1,500 metres, Ta Xua is known for its mountain landscapes, cloud-covered viewpoints, ancient Shan Tuyet tea plantations and the cultural traditions of its H’Mong community.
Visitor Numbers and Tourism Growth
Ta Xua welcomed approximately 56,000 visitors during the first half of 2026, generating around 54 billion Vietnamese dong in tourism revenue.
Tourism has also created new opportunities for local residents. Around 88 households now operate community guesthouses, while some families have moved from farming into tourism-related businesses.
Sustainable Tourism Remains a Priority
The growing popularity of Ta Xua has also raised concerns about waste management, traffic, construction and pressure on its natural surroundings. Experts have called for careful planning to protect its mountain scenery, cultural heritage and popular cloud-viewing locations.
The destination’s next challenge will be balancing international tourism growth with environmental protection and meaningful participation by local communities.
